About Dr. Catherine L. Karmel, MD
Catherine Karmel is a medical doctor with a specialty in gynecology.
She is known as the global gynecologist because she treats the whole person not just the symptoms. She incorporates the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of a patient in her treatment and diagnosis.
Dr. Karmel has been in private practice since 1995 and works in the Texas Medical Center focusing on women’s healthcare. She is the Gynecologic consultant for the Triangle Area Network Clinics which provide care to the underserved in Beaumont and Orange, Texas. She also works with The J.Flowers Health Institute who provides executive concierge services and evaluations for complex patients. She has been practicing medicine for 25 years and each year she grows more passionate about medicine and taking care of her patients.
Dr. Karmel grew up in an intellectual household surrounded by music, art and books, and was interested in medicine from a very young age. A favorite photograph from her childhood is one that her father took when she was 10 years old. She had fallen asleep in a chair reading the book “Great Women in Medicine.” Her family referenced that photograph often as she was growing up, and when she graduated from medical school and realized her childhood dream.
Dr. Karmel graduated from Duke University with a major in comparative literature. During her undergraduate years she took a semester off to volunteer at a medical clinic in India. It was that experience that reminded her why she wanted to be a physician. In fact it was so rewarding that she later volunteered in other third-world countries including Morocco and Madagascar as she completed her training.
After completing her Bachelor of Arts, she went back to school to study medicine. She moved to Chicago to attend Chicago Medical School. Medical school in Chicago exposed her to both inner-city public medicine and private-sector medicine, wellness and health care. This combined with her experiences doing clinical work in developing countries clarified her understanding that the human condition is universal.

Upon graduation, she moved to Houston, Texas, for her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine in the renowned Texas Medical Center. She stayed in Houston and went into private practice in 1995 and formed Karmel Women’s Care in 1996. Dr. Karmel treats women young and old, from adolescence through menopause and post-menopause. She has a diagnostic sixth-sense and the ability to read patients and un-cover details that are not easily seen.
Dr. Karmel is board certified ob-gyn since 1998 and a fellow of the American College of OB-Gyn since 2000. She has post graduate training and certification in hypnosis from the highly respected American Society for Clinical Hypnosis. She is a member of the North American Menopause Society, Texas Medical Association, Harris County Medical Association and others.
A lifelong learner, she is always exploring ways to grow in her field. In her free time she loves to spend time with family and friends, check out new restaurants, cook and listen to music.
Her COVID perk was reconnecting with her now 83 yr old violin teacher and starting lessons again after more than 30 years!
